But what is transloading, exactly? And when should shippers, carriers, and logistics providers start looking for transloading services?

What Is Transloading?
Transloading is the process of moving freight from one mode or type of transportation to another.
In simple terms, a load arrives on one type of equipment, is unloaded, and is transferred to equipment better suited for the next stage of its journey.
That might mean moving freight in a different way than it showed up.

- From a dry van to a flatbed
- From rail to truck
- From a larger trailer to smaller transportation equipment
Why go through the extra step?
Because the transportation method that works for one part of a shipment’s journey isn’t always the best option for the next.

Why Is Transloading Necessary?
Sometimes, transloading comes down to something as simple as how the receiver can access the freight.
Consider a shipment traveling on a dry van. At a typical receiving facility, the trailer backs up to a loading dock so the freight can be unloaded.
If the receiver doesn’t have a dock, however, unloading becomes a problem.
Transloading the product onto a flatbed gives the receiver side access to the freight, allowing it to be safely unloaded with a forklift. The reverse can also be true depending on the receiving facility and its available equipment.
Other shipments require transloading because they arrive in cargo containers that may need to be moved to various locations, breaking down the load into multiple loads, need temporary storage, or can move more efficiently on different transportation equipment.
The goal is to give shippers greater supply chain flexibility by matching the freight with the equipment and handling resources needed to keep it moving.
Container Transloading & Rail-to-Truck Freight Transfers
Container transloading is one of the most common applications we see at Axis.
Freight manufactured overseas may arrive in the United States by ship before continuing inland by rail. Once the container reaches a rail yard, the product may need to be transferred to a truck for delivery to its final destination.
For example, one of the most common products we’ve transloaded is steel pipe shipped from overseas in cargo containers. Once the container arrives, the pipe can be unloaded and transferred onto a flatbed better suited for the next leg of transportation.
This type of rail-to-truck transloading requires more than a place to unload freight.
Location matters. Experience matters. Knowledge matters. Strategy matters. And most importantly, your product matters.
Cargo containers generally need to be returned to the port or rail yard where they were picked up. The farther a driver travels with the container, the farther that empty equipment may need to travel on the return trip.
That additional mileage can increase transportation costs.

How Does the Transloading Process Work?
Every load is different, but a typical transloading project at Axis begins with understanding the freight.
What does the product weigh?
How does the product need to be secured or stored?
Is the product hazardous?
What are the regulatory impacts of the load?
Can it be safely lifted with a forklift?
Does it require a crane?
If a crane is necessary, where are the lifting points?
Does the freight need to be stored?
Does the customer need help moving the container to our facility or delivering the load to its final destination?
Once we understand the freight and what the customer needs, we coordinate its arrival at our facility.
Our team inspects the load for shifting or other issues before carefully unloading the product. From there, the freight may move directly onto its next truck or remain safely stored at Axis until the customer is ready for delivery.
When it’s time to move again, we work with the outbound driver to properly position and load the freight for the next leg of transportation. Once everything is secured, the shipment continues on its way.
At every stage, our priority is the same: protect the freight and keep it moving.
Transloading vs. Cross Docking: What’s the Difference?
Transloading and cross-docking are closely related logistics services, but they aren’t exactly the same.
Transloading involves moving freight from one transportation mode or equipment type to another.
A cargo container may be unloaded onto a flatbed. Freight from a dry van may be transferred to equipment the receiver can more easily access.
Unlike transloading, cross-docking generally moves freight between the same type of transportation equipment.
A broken trailer, missed delivery appointment, or change in the receiver’s schedule may require freight to be unloaded and transferred to another trailer. In many cases, this happens quickly. When the load needs to remain at the facility longer, temporary warehousing may provide the flexibility needed until it can move again.
When Does Transloading Become Warehousing?
Not every transloaded shipment immediately leaves the facility.
Sometimes, the freight has arrived in the right region before the final destination is ready for it.
Axis once worked with a company shipping building materials to a jobsite in Alabama. The materials were on their way, but the jobsite wouldn’t be ready to receive them for approximately three months.
We received and offloaded multiple trailer loads of building materials and stored the freight at our warehouse. Once the jobsite was ready, the products were loaded and shipped to their final destination.
That’s where having transloading and warehousing capabilities at the same facility becomes particularly valuable.
Axis maintains designated warehouse space to support transloading projects, allowing us to store freight when necessary and adapt to the customer’s timeline.
The shipment doesn’t have to stop simply because the final destination isn’t ready.
Can Transloading Reduce Freight Costs?
Transloading isn’t only about solving equipment problems.
In some situations, it can create opportunities for freight optimization.
A partial load moving on a flatbed, for example, may be able to continue its journey on a box truck or another form of transportation better suited to the size and weight of the shipment.
Freight may also be consolidated or transferred to rail depending on the route and transportation requirements.
There isn’t one solution that works for every shipment.
But matching freight with the right transportation mode can help reduce unnecessary expenses, improve equipment utilization, and create a more efficient transportation plan.
Sometimes, moving freight one more time helps it move smarter.
What Should You Look for in a Transload Facility?
A successful transload depends on more than available warehouse space.
The facility needs the equipment, access, and experience required to safely handle the freight.
Equipment & Lifting Capacity
Axis operates a forklift capable of lifting up to 10,000 pounds.
We also have four overhead cranes, each capable of lifting up to five tons. Our cranes are positioned above the area where flatbeds can enter the facility, allowing us to support crane-assisted freight transfers when products can’t be safely handled with a forklift.
Heavy machinery, large electrical units, and freight without forklift access points may all require specialized lifting capabilities.
Most loads we handle can be moved with a forklift.
When they can’t, it’s good to have another option.
Loading & Trailer Access
Our facility includes a dock specifically designed for container-height trucks, along with a drive-in area for flatbeds.
These capabilities allow our team to work with different equipment types and adapt the transloading process to the freight in front of us.
Storage & Security
Axis offers indoor warehouse storage and outdoor yard storage for products that don’t require an enclosed environment.
Our building and yard are monitored by 24-hour surveillance and an active alarm system. We also maintain areas within the warehouse that can be locked for an additional level of security.
Whether freight stays for several hours or several months, protecting the customer’s product remains a priority.

That access helps trucks reach our transload facility and continue toward destinations throughout the Southeast.
